This Great, Diverse City: How Should We See It?
CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHS OF NEW YORK CITY

David M. Grossman

Someone one said, “Light and Darkness are the world’s eternal ways.” Eli Siegel said in reference to New York City, there are “quiet and tumult, profundities and mischief.” All imagery and expression is only possible through the reciprocal dance of the opposites. From this arises a perception of the whole, a unity in which each partakes in a transcendent blending.

There is a kind of compression that is New York that intensifies things, heightening awareness and fructifying creativity. Thus many of the everyday events on the streets of this amazing city take on, for a moment, mythic or archetypal proportions. I attempt to be a kind of witness to that reality.
