Standing in the center of a large retail store on West 23rd Street and looking up, I was surprised to see that a large opening was above, extending up five or six floors to a skylight at the top. The windows around this vertical shaft had a residential rather than commercial look and seemed of an earlier time. The trans­par­ency of a bit of glass ceiling allowed me to see high and low neatly together, along with old and new. I raised my camera to show, if I could, in this New York interior, the truth of the Aesthetic Realism principle, “In reality opposites are one; art shows this.”
