One quiet June evening, I was walking on Houston Street with my view camera, eager to see those moments when daylight is in the sky as evening is near— the “quiet and tumult,” “twirls and manifestations” of New York at twilight. As I passed Katz’s Deli, I was taken by the neon sign, the glowing lights and bright interior, all lit up like a lively festival in the solitude and shadows of the fast approaching twilight. And then in the midst were those dignified and mischievous salamis and sausages hanging vertically in neat rows. The bicycle gives a feeling of humanity in the empty street. The round wheels give a lift and motion to the stillness outside, while inside we can see people eating and countermen busily preparing hot dogs and knishes. The “profundities and mischief” of New York continue to thrill me after all these years.
