The photographer has caught the moment just before the robin will fill one or two of those eager mouths. This may be the father robin (given his rich colors), and he is serious. His keen eye is focused on feeding his hungry babes. This parental job represents life ongoing, life itself, and we feel his skill and tenderness.
At one with the serious is beautiful grace. There’s the glow of color: pink and gold in the beaks and throats of the chicks, the robin’s shapely orange breast, the soft, round white and pink-tinged flowers framed by the rough gray of the tree. The graceful upward curve in the tree embraces the whole composition.
Many people have seen seriousness as something heavy and tedious—and I did. We can be inspired otherwise by this remarkable photo.
