The photographer notes, “This photo was taken on the Niger River in Mali, and shows a fisherman launching his net.”
Massimo Rinversi chose the moment when there was a thrilling composition: as the net is flying aloft and free, the vertical of the fisherman’s body and horizontal of the shoreline provide stability and order. The net, like a waving rectangle, echoes that vertical and horizontal. Balanced at the tip of the boat, the man launches the net so it will fully unfold and catch the most fish. And he lets go with such accuracy.
Tremendous control and abandon are together in this moment caught by the photographer, and the oneness of these opposites meets something deep in me, and I think everyone. We can mistakenly feel our freedom is just letting go, but the beauty here shows that accuracy makes for true freedom.
