NANCY STARRELS, Untitled [Man on Motorcycle]
This man seen, as Nancy Starrels said, through a taxicab window, is formidable, mysterious, moving. His profile—in dark and light—is dynamic, intent.

We can see very little of his serious face, framed by the angle of his bright collar and darkly shining helmet. But the big thing about this photo is the reflection on his helmet of the world around him: buildings, sky, and one point of brilliant light. They seem to me to stand for the world in his mind.

I feel this photograph represents what Nancy Starrels learned from Eli Siegel: the respect we need to have for people. There is a world of thought and feeling we do not know within anyone we see. Because of this great education, she took memorable photographs, and taught what she learned in her class “The Honoring Eye.” I’m grateful to be learning from her photographs now.
